MainStreet Plainfield is an organization whose sole purpose is to promote historic downtown Plainfield. A vibrant and interesting downtown benefits everyone who lives, visits, or does business in the Plainfield area.

Why Is Our Downtown Important?

Historic Downtown Plainfield is important to so many of us, for a variety of reasons.  Downtown is our historical center, a traditional gathering place, and our retail core.  With our unique, irreplaceable historic architecture and walkable shopping district, downtown Plainfield is a showcase for our community.

Downtown Plainfield has a rich history that has been passed down from generation to generation.  Did you know that Plainfield is the only place in America where historic Route 66 and Route 30 (Lincoln Highway) join together and travel a short distance?  Or did you know that downtown Plainfield is home to the oldest commercial building in Will County?  By supporting downtown, you are helping to preserve and communicate the history of our community.

Even though you may not work, shop, or live near downtown, the health of our business district does affect you.  People outside our community see the downtown as a reflection of Plainfield as a whole.  It is a reflection of our community pride as well as our heritage.  Downtown businesses are an important part of our community’s economic health.  While so much of our lives are dominated by hectic schedules, the downtown shops and services offer a unique, personalized touch and provide an outlet for enjoyment. 

We are very fortunate to be a part of a community that cares about the future of our downtown.  As growth all around us influences downtown Plainfield, it’s more important than ever that we work together to preserve our past and plan for a bright future.

MainStreet Plainfield is part of the Illinois Main Street Program, which includes about 50 Illinois communities. It is a volunteer organization.
